She may not fly a plane, carry a rifle or go into combat, but the NZ Defence Force (NZDF) reckons Shirley McGrath’s customer service is on point.

Shirley, our Electricity Regional Account Manager based in Palmerston North, looks after the Defence Force’s electricity interests in Ohakea, Waiouru and Linton.

Her customer service saw her nominated in the ‘Special Award’ category of the Minister of Defence Award of Excellence to Industry (NZ Defence Industry Advisory Council 2020 Awards).

“Shirley, I am honoured to have the privilege of acknowledging the high-quality partner that NZDF has in you and Powerco,” Head of Defence Estate and Infrastructure, Mark Brunton, says.

“From the bearing electricity charges have on the annual charging baseline, to the negotiation, to establishing a new Powerco-owned electricity substation in a relatively short timeframe, your accessibility and willingness to engage has been paramount in ensuring a successful relationship for both parties.”

“Your judiciousness and positivity not only meet Defence values, they have allowed you to develop lasting and trusted professional relationships with Defence personnel and being recognised as a key enabler for the NZDF in the region. Your tireless work on our behalf in this regard is sincerely appreciated.”

While Shirley is humbled by the praise, she’s quick to acknowledge her Powerco colleagues.

“It’s not just about an individual, but a true reflection of Powerco team effort. NZDF sentiments have to go to all those at Powerco for the support and good work everyone is and has been doing over the years working with NZDF. We are one collaborative and talented team I am proud to work with.”
