Solar power for home and business

Connecting your generation

If you’re installing your own solar power, wind or liquid fuel power generator and you want to connect to our network for reliability or to feed excess supply back into the grid, you need to let us know so that we can ensure it’s safely connected to our network.

We’ve increased the export limit for single-phase inverters from 5kW up to 10kW, giving customers the ability to export more solar generation back to the grid.

What this means for you

  • Faster approvals for compliant* systems up to 10kW export

  • Greater opportunity to make the most of your solar investment

  • Continued assurance that all systems meet safety and network protection standards

*Compliant refers to approved inverters that meet Powerco’s technical and safety requirements and is subject to available capacity for 10kW export.

For a full guide to our distributed generation process, read our distributed generation policy, or see below for an overview.

Request a review of your current solar export limit

If you already have solar connected to our network, you can now apply to increase your export limit to 10kW.

While export limit of up to 10kW is now permitted for single phase inverter configurations, if the transformer cannot accommodate this, the limit will remain at the available capacity.

To request a review, please email us at distributedgeneration@powerco.co.nz and include the following details

  • DG application number
  • ICP number
  • Site address
  • Inverter installed
  • Proposed connection date

Reviews will be assessed on a first-come, first-served basis. We’re currently receiving a high volume of requests, so we appreciate your patience while we work through them.

Network export constraints

These transformers are nearing maximum network capacity and are subject to export capacity constraints. If you’re connecting to one of these transformers the amount of electricity your system can feed back into the network may be limited.
