Hutt Valley infrastructure upgrade

Hutt Valley infrastructure upgrade

To ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the gas network in Hutt Valley, we’re renewing the corrosion prevention equipment (known as Cathodic protection) we have in place to protect the underground steel pipelines.

This essential infrastructure upgrade will protect the pipeline and preserve the quality of the gas lines into the future - keeping the gas flowing safely for customers.

What’s happening

Our contractors will:

  • Dig around our gas pipeline (approximately a 30m x 3-4m site) to install corrosion prevention equipment on Sylvan Way, Upper Hutt and Petone Memorial Park, Lower Hutt.
  • Lay underground cables from Sylvan Way to Kiln Street, in Upper Hutt and Petone Memorial Park to Bracken Street and part of Petone Memorial Park accessway in Lower Hutt connecting to the device that powers the corrosion prevention equipment at each site.
  • Decommission older equipment at Tillbury Street.

What to expect

You can expect to see our contractors CCE (Corrosion Control Engineering) and Downer completing this work. Traffic management will be in place as this work takes place so residents and visitors to the areas may experience some local disruption. Thank you for your understanding as we complete this important work.

When

Work is expected to start in early April 2026 in Upper Hutt, followed one to two weeks later in Lower Hutt and is expected to take three to four weeks in total, weather dependent.

Why does this matter?

Cathodic Protection systems are essential for preventing corrosion, reducing the risk of leaks, and ensuring the safe delivery of gas to homes and businesses.

Will there be any disruption to supply, ie outages?

No.The Cathodic Protection renewal work will be carried out on the external surface of the pipelines. The project does not expect to cause any disruptions to gas supply.
