Helicopter and drones assessing damage
Powerco crews are using a break in the weather in Wairarapa, before the next forecast gale force winds arrive, to assess the damage to the electricity network from the air.
A helicopter and drones are being used to view difficult to access areas of Powerco’s electricity network, including forestry blocks, and plan work to restore supply.
Crews are continuing to reconnect customers affected by Tuesday’s high winds. As of 11am Thursday, 976 customers remain without power in Wairarapa – down from 1,700 late yesterday afternoon. The single largest outage is 427 customers in Riversdale on the eastern coast, where lines came down Tuesday morning.
Powerco Head of Network Operations, Mark Dunn, says crews have worked tirelessly to restore supply to affected customers, and will continue reconnecting people where it is safe to do so. Extra crews are being brought into the region to assist restoration efforts.
