Palmerston North electricity upgrade

Palmerston North electricity upgrade

Thursday, January 8, 2026
Work starts next week on an upgrade to Palmerston North’s electricity infrastructure, with a new 2.7km underground circuit being installed between Palmerston North Regional Hospital and the Main Street substation.

“This upgrade will help maintain a secure and resilient power supply for this critical health service and the surrounding areas while ensuring the network can support future demand as the city grows,” says Powerco GM Electricity Karen Frew.

Construction will begin at Gate 8 of the hospital entrance on Tremaine Avenue, continuing along Heretaunga, Featherston and Albert streets, finishing up at the substation on Main Street. The project is expected to take around six months.

The work will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption, with only short sections of road affected at one time for trenching and cable installation. Roads will be reinstated progressively as the project moves forward. While partial road closures will be necessary, these will be carefully managed to reduce the impact on residents and businesses.

“We’d like to thank the community in advance for their patience and understanding. We know this work may cause some inconvenience and we appreciate the support,” says Karen Frew.
