New electricity field services contracts begin
Powerco’s new electricity field services contracts begin today.
Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew says the new contracts are a foundation to allow Powerco to build and maintain the infrastructure needed for the future.
“Demand for electricity is evolving fast, and the new agreements allow us to maintain and enhance the infrastructure essential for helping Kiwis embrace electrification as New Zealand moves towards sustainable energy choices,” she says.
In March this year, Downer and Northpower were awarded primary contractor roles to provide construction, maintenance and fault repair services for regions on Powerco’s North Island electricity distribution network.
Northpower was also awarded secondary contractor roles, along with Unison and Horizon, to provide support to Powerco’s primary contractors for construction, maintenance and fault repairs.
Karen Frew anticipates a different electricity network from what we see today. While traditional infrastructure like power lines, poles, cables, transformers, and substations will still require maintenance and renewal, the integration and scale of new technologies and responding to changing customer needs will be markedly different.
“The next five to 10 years will be a period of intense activity. Through these long-term sustainable partnerships, we’ll maintain and develop the critical infrastructure necessary to support our journey to net zero," she says.
In October 2024, Powerco requested tenders for Electricity Field Services Agreements (EFSA), Customer Delivery Services Agreements (CDSA) and Maintenance Inspection Services Agreement (MISA) for their North Island network.
The MISA agreement is also in place from today. The CDSA agreement begins on 1 September 2025.
