Lower Hutt mural artist wanted

Tuesday, January 20, 2026

Powerco’s gas business, The Gas Hub, is calling for expressions of interest from local mural artists to create a large-scale public artwork on a District Regulator Station (DRS) on Hutt Road, Petone.

“This is a chance for a local artist to reimagine one of our gas assets and transform it into an artwork that reflects the stories, identity, and character of the community,” says Powerco General Manager Gas Don Elers.

The DRS plays a critical role in safely supplying gas to homes and businesses, it also sits in a prominent, high-traffic location.

“With the right artwork, this art on assets project has the potential to transform an essential asset into a vibrant landmark for locals and visitors alike,” says Don Elers.

Priority will be given to artists with a strong local connection, and to concepts that reflect the site and its context.

“This project is as much about beautifying infrastructure as it is empowering a local artist to tell the story of Lower Hutt in a meaningful way to create a sense of pride, connection and belonging.”

To find out how to apply head to The Gas Hub website. All submissions must be received by 5pm Sunday 22 February 2026. The artwork is expected to be completed no later than May 2026.

This project forms part of Powerco’s art on assets programme, which sees murals painted on electricity and gas assets across its network. The initiative aims to reduce the visual impact of infrastructure and helps deter graffiti.
