Powerco shares top energy efficiency tips for winter
As winter sets in, it's crucial to ensure our homes are energy efficient to maintain comfort while saving on energy costs.
As part of Powerco’s sponsorship strategy, they work with organisations like WISE, Sustainability Options, Kāinga Whakatipu and Whairoa Trust to help remediate homes and educate families on how they can create healthier more energy efficient homes, and now they want to share their energy-efficient tips with all their customers.
”Supporting community wellbeing initiatives is one way we can help our customers create warmer, drier and more energy efficient homes, but everyone can benefit from making small behaviour changes within their homes to create a more energy efficient home,” says Powerco Communications and Engagement Manager Robyn Towning.
Powerco’s top tips focus on efficient heating, draft prevention, heat pump usage and managing dampness.
Moisture can enter your home from external sources like water leaks and ground humidity.
Controlling moisture inside the home can also reduce dampness – ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens is key and wiping condensation from crying windows helps prevent damp air from circulating. Removing any plants or obstructions that block sunlight from reaching your house can also help.
“By doing some work in advance of the cooler weather hitting and adopting a few simple habits, you can have a big impact on the energy efficiency of your home,” says Robyn Towning.

Draft prevention
A home's warmth can easily slip out through gaps, leading to a chillier home and higher heating bills. They recommend sealing off any gaps around windows, doors and using gap filler for gaps between floorboards, skirting boards, and walls.Efficient heating
The World Health Organisation suggests healthy homes need to be at least 18°C. If you have young children, elderly family members or anyone who’s unwell, aim for around 20°C to help everyone stay healthier.Heat pump usage
The proper use of heat pumps can significantly lower heating costs as they are a major energy expense in homes. Setting it higher makes the heat pump work harder and will increase your power bills. For example, running it at 26°C uses 50% more power than at 21°C.Damp management
Excess moisture and mould can lead to health problems such as breathing difficulties, particularly for young children and the elderly. Maintaining a dry home is essential.Moisture can enter your home from external sources like water leaks and ground humidity.
