Work to upgrade the electricity network in Morrinsville has started this week. This project aims to ensure reliable power supply for the Morrinsville community and the surrounding areas, supporting both current and future growth.

Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew says the Morrinsville upgrade will enable the continued reliability of the town’s power supply.

“Our focus is ensuring the people and businesses of Morrinsville have the electricity supply they need, now and in the future, reducing the risk of future outages,” says Karen Frew.

The project will see:

  • The installation of a new 33kV switch room, adjacent to the existing Morrinsville substation
  • A new substation on Magistrates Avenue
  • Approximately 2.8km of new 33kV underground power cables from the Morrinsville substation to the new Magistrates Avenue substation.

As the community continues to expand, it is important to ensure that the power supply can keep up with increased demand.

“With significant new industrial and residential development proposals in the area, additional network capacity will accommodate anticipated future growth,” says Karen Frew.

The work is being carried out on behalf of Powerco by Marra Construction, Downer, Watts & Hughes and Northpower, and is expected to be finished by May 2026.
