Building and working near power lines? Know the rules before you start
One of Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest electricity distributors is reminding builders, developers and contractors to plan ahead and follow electrical safe distance rules when working or building near power lines.
Powerco is reminding the construction industry that building too close to overhead power lines, poles and other electricity infrastructure can put their staff in danger of electrocution as well as secondary impacts such as costly project delays.
The reminder forms part of Powerco’s ongoing ‘building near power lines’ health and safety campaign, focused on raising awareness of the minimum safe distances required under the New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice – NZECP34: Electrical Safe Distances.
Powerco General Manager Electricity, Karen Frew, says power lines are often near many construction sites, but the risks of working too close to them can be underestimated. Awareness and planning to stay well away are critical.
“Whether it’s scaffolding, roofing, excavation, traffic management, temporary structures or permanent buildings, work near electricity assets needs to be carefully planned from the outset,” she says.
Powerco reminds the public that if they are unsure of the minimum distance between a structure and overhead power lines, they should stay at least 4 metres away. Structures must remain clear of lines both underneath and to the side.
Karen Frew says understanding safe distance requirements early can help avoid unnecessary risk and project disruption.
“Planning ahead helps keep people safe and can avoid costly redesigns or delays later. If you’re building or working near power lines, check the requirements before you start.”
Before designing, planning or carrying out any work under or near power lines, poles, stay wires or other electricity network equipment, contact 0800 Powerco (0800 769 372) and if the work is in Powerco’s electricity network area the team can help with the plans. If the work is outside Powerco’s area, it’s best to contact the local electricity lines company for advice. More information on building near power lines, including clearance requirements, can be found on Powerco’s website. A map of lines companies can be found here.
