Severe weather - Tuesday, 3.30pm update

Wairarapa and Tararua

The storm recovery in Wairarapa and Tararua is now winding down, with Monday's storm conditions not being as severe as anticipated in the region.

During the past week, more than 100 fault people from throughout the North Island have joined the local fault crews’ restoration effort in Wairarapa and Tararua, travelling from Hamilton, Tauranga, New Plymouth and Matamata.

As of 3pm today (Tuesday 28 October) there were 21 properties without power in Wairarapa. All customers who lost power in last week's storms, now have supply.  A generator has been supplying power to 156 customers in South Featherston to all crews to replace two power poles damaged when a tree came down near the corner of Longwood Rd and South Featherston Rd last Thursday. The poles are being replaced today.

Taranaki

Customers in Huiroa/Douglas (41 properties) and Strathmore/Whangamomona (34 customers) should prepare to be without power overnight tonight (Tuesday) following weather delays in making repairs in their areas following Monday afternoon's high winds. A helicopter is required to complete repairs to power lines that have been damaged and ongoing winds have made it unsafe to fly. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Tuesday, 8am update

We had additional crews on standby across our network on Monday night to respond to the forecast severe weather.

Conditions were not as severe as expected.

Overnight outages were mainly located in Taranaki (the Stratford and Whangamomona areas) and in the Thames-Coromandel District, with limited impact to Wairarapa.

At its peak, we had 1,455 customers without power at 7pm Monday night. As of 8am this morning, 155 customers were waiting to be reconnected, the bulk in Taranaki where 97 customers were without power.

Crews are out making repairs today. There is also some ongoing repair work being carried out in Wairarapa.

Here's what you need to know

If you are experiencing an outage:

In an emergency, such as lines down

  • Always treat lines as live
  • Stay at least 10m away from downed lines and poles
  • Phone us on 0800 27 27 27 or fire and emergency on 111 - we respond to emergencies 24/7

We work to reconnect you as quickly and safely as we can

  • Depending on the conditions crews may not be able to reconnect you right away.
  • For instance, it may be too dangerous to scale ladders to reach the top of poles, or trees might need to be cleared from lines.
  • That means crews may need to wait until weather clears before returning to make repairs and reconnect you.
  • We respond 24/7 to emergencies - to make sure customers are safe (such as making sure downed lines are no longer live).

We know it is very difficult to be without power.

Please be patient, and kind to our crews, they work hard to reconnect you as safely and as quickly as they can.
