Petone gas leak

Powerco gas field crews have completed the isolation of the gas mains and made repairs, following a gas leak in Victoria Street in Petone, Wellington.

There is not a risk to the public and no evacuations have needed to take place, Powerco Gas Operations Manager Brett Wolfsbauer says.

A section of Victoria Street between the Esplanade and just before the intersection with Union St will remain closed to traffic until about 7pm this evening (Thursday).

Business customers in the affected area have been able to continue operating, with no customers losing gas supply as a result of the leak, Brett Wolfsbauer says.

There continues to be access to local businesses, including Wellington Water, NZ Safety Blackwoods and McDonalds via Jackson Street into Victoria Street.

“Powerco was alerted to the leak through a call to our gas emergency phone line just before 10 o’clock this morning. Our gas service provider was working on a section of gas line in the location at the time and it appears they have accidentally hit the gas main, resulting in a leak.

“They did exactly the right thing by immediately calling our emergency line, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand promptly attended and will continue to stay on site until the leak is isolated, allowing for repairs to be completed,” he says.

People can call Powerco on 0800 111 848 if they think they smell gas or have gas concerns.

“We want people to report any suspicious gas odours so we can investigate them and help keep them safe. Whether they turn out to be gas leaks or not, it’s better that people let us know if they think they smell gas, rather than ignoring it.”
