Powerco has welcomed its newest Board member, Juliet Tainui-Hernández (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Whakatōhea, Te Whānau a Apanui), with a mihi whakatau at its New Plymouth office.

Juliet is a professional director and lawyer with more than 25 years’ experience spanning legal and financial services, regulation, central banking, infrastructure, investment and iwi economic development. She is a director of ASB Bank and Whai Rawa Fund, a trustee of Rewiring Aotearoa and Skills Group Trust, and a standing member of the Waitangi Tribunal.

Previously, Juliet was an Assistant Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and a director of Ngāi Tahu Holdings. She has also spent two decades working internationally, including as a Partner, Global Chief Compliance Officer and Business Transformation Director at major international firms.

She brings to the Powerco Board particular experience in governance, regulated businesses, risk, transformation, people and engagement, with a strong focus on long-term stewardship and the transition to a more resilient and sustainable economy.

Juliet says she is delighted to be joining the Board at such an important time for the sector.

“Reliable, resilient and affordable energy infrastructure is fundamental to New Zealand’s economic future and to the households, businesses and communities that rely on it every day. Electrification, new technologies and changing patterns of energy use are reshaping the sector, and Powerco is exceptionally well placed to help shape that future.”

Juliet Tainui-Hernández’s appointment follows the departure of Board member Philip Cory-Wright.
