Wild weather causes power outages

Strong winds have caused a number of power outages across Powerco’s network overnight and Wednesday morning, with Taranaki and Bay of Plenty mainly affected.

Currently approximately 5,500 customers are without power.

Extra field crew have been dispatched to respond to outages and reconnect customers.

Network Operations Manager Scott Horniblow says the ongoing wild weather will impact how quickly power can be restored.

“Our crews are hard at work responding to outages as quickly and as safely as they can. However, in some cases it’s too gusty to climb ladders and repair equipment at the top of poles,” he says.

“The safety of our people and our customers is paramount and we thank customers for their patience as we work to restore power while ensuring our crews are keeping safe.”

Powerco advises customers to tie down trampolines, outdoor furniture and anything else that can blow into lines and cause outages.

In the event of an emergency such as lines coming down, people should stay well clear of lines and call Powerco’s emergency line on 0800 27 27 27.

Powerco also advises that the outage map on powerco.co.nz is currently experiencing technical issues, with incorrect information being shown. Customers can still report if they’re experiencing an outage by either filling in the form on the website - https://www.powerco.co.nz/outages/report-an-outage - or by contacting their retailer.
