Wairarapa power restoration work to begin at first light

Friday, July 22, 2022
Powerco crews will be out at first light today working to restore supply to Wairarapa customers without power following yesterday’s high winds.

At 6.30am today, 532 customers were without power in Wairarapa.

Last evening, power reconnection efforts were hampered by the severe weather conditions, with some roads inaccessible to electricity field crews because of flooding and slips, Powerco Head of Network Operations, Caz Haydon, says.

“Thank you to those customers who have been waiting patiently for their power to be reconnected.

“The damage to the network from the winds, which were gusting up to 130 kilometres an hour in places, was widespread and unfortunately some customers were without power overnight because we simply couldn’t get crews to affected areas because we couldn’t get access.

“Weather and access permitting, we’ll be doing everything we can today to get communities reconnected,” Caz Haydon says.

Extra crews from outside Wairarapa are arriving today to help with the restoration effort, she says.

The Longbush and Cape Palliser communities were among the worst affected, with slips and flooding making access impossible.
