Strong winds cause widespread outages - 4.30pm update

Strong winds have caused a number of power outages across Powerco’s network, with Taranaki and Bay of Plenty experiencing the most disruption.

Severe gusts continue to blow vegetation and other debris into the lines, resulting in a loss of power to approximately 33,925 customers across the North Island.

Extra field crews have been dispatched to respond to outages and reconnect customers.

Network Operations Manager Scott Horniblow says the ongoing wild weather will impact how quickly power can be restored.

“Our crews are hard at work responding to outages as quickly and as safely as they can. However, there may be times when it’s too gusty to climb ladders and repair equipment at the top of poles. In these instances, it’s just not safe to continue working, so we’re required to wait until the winds have subsided,” he says.

“The safety of our people and our customers is paramount, and we thank customers for their patience as we work to restore power while ensuring our crews are keeping safe.

“In the event of an emergency such as power lines coming down, we urge people to stay well clear of lines as they may be live and call our emergency line on 0800 27 27 27.”
