Powerco managing electricity load

Thursday, June 23, 2022
Powerco has responded to Transpower’s request for electricity lines companies nationwide to reduce load on the national grid.

National Grid operator Transpower issued a notice to lines companies before 8am this morning, signalling a risk of insufficient electricity generation to cover this morning’s peak power use.

In response, controlled hot water systems across Powerco’s electricity network areas were temporarily switched off from about 8am to reduce network load.

“Managing controlled hot water systems helps lessen the load on the National Grid and avoids the need to disconnect customers,” says Powerco General Manager Electricity Karen Frew.

“From about 9am, customers’ hot water systems are being progressively switched back on from following Transpower’s instructions to do so, as peak power load has passed.

Customers will have hot water however we advise them to keep their hot tap use to a minimum, as hot water systems could take longer to reheat after use this morning,” says Karen Frew.

“Thank you to our customers for your understanding.”
