Hinuera supply reinforcement project
Powerco has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to provide alternative electricity supply options for Putaruru, Tirau, parts of Matamata, and surrounding areas. This will improve the reliability and security of the supply to customers in the area.
Matamata, Putaruru and Tirau are supplied with electricity from the National Grid via Transpower’s Hinuera substation. There is a single 110,000-volt line from Transpower’s Karapiro substation supplying Hinuera substation.
When there is an outage on Transpower’s network, 8,700 customers are affected. Powerco can restore supply to 2,900 customers by using a different network configuration from its Piako substation.
In 2014, Powerco consulted with the local community on proposals to improve the reliability of supply, and reducing the number and length of power cuts.
The overwhelming response supported improving the reliability of supply. The majority supported transmission enhancements proposed by Powerco.
Powerco is revaluating transmission and non-transmission solutions for the project, which was approved as part of Powerco’s Customised Price Path.
The RFI kicks off the formal engagement with the market to supply to transmission alternatives for the Hinuera supply reinforcement project. It also acts a registration of Interest from parties to participate in any future Powerco Request For Proposals.
