Construction of a temporary overhead power line to reinforce electricity supply to central Palmerston North has been completed.

The line provides security of supply to the city while Powerco replaces underground cables. One of the cables recently showed signs of deterioration.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the 3km-long temporary line, between the Keith Street and Main Street substations, took just under two weeks to finish.

“Our teams have done a fantastic job to have the line operational is such a short time-frame.”

He thanked the people of Palmerston North and the city council for their understanding and support.

“People have been very supportive and helpful which we appreciate. Again, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience the work caused.”

The overhead line will be important in the short-term to ensure a reliable electricity supply to the CBD is maintained,” Mr Marsh added.

The project to replace the underground cables, which run underneath The Square, will take around 12 months.
