Severe weather causes power cuts: Update 2

Saturday, June 20, 2015

Power has been temporarily restored to 4500 Whanganui properties after floodwaters earlier inundated a substation cutting supply.

However, Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson, said it would have to be switched off again for about four hours this afternoon to clear debris and trees from high voltage lines. That break will affect about 3000 customers in the Westmere, Kai Iwi, Whanganui, St Johns and Brunswick areas.

Meanwhile the heavy rain continues to cause power supply problems in several Taranaki areas.

About 360 properties in Whakamara, in South Taranaki, lost power on Friday night and a slip on the Tangahoe Valley Road is still preventing field crews from accessing the network and making repairs.

In eastern Taranaki more than 400 properties at Strathmore are likely to be without power overnight. Slips also blocked access to the problem areas and it was the same story in North Taranaki near Uruti where 45 properties are cut off .

“There could be lines down in any of these areas and we urge people to stay well clear of any fallen wires and phone Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727,” Mr Stevenson said.
