Restoration effort continues
Restoration of Powerco’s network in Taranaki after Cyclone Gita is now centred on mopping up the remaining customers still without power.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the bulk of those were customers with faults localised to their properties. These faults are spread throughout the province.
“Each requires a visit from a contractor,” he said. “This is very time consuming and we are currently dealing with 600 such faults. Our workers have been on the go since the cyclone struck on Tuesday night but are doing their best to cope with the next phase of our recovery.”
The scale of damage in Eastern Taranaki, including Strathmore, Toko, Douglas and Whangamomona, is massive and parts of that network will require a rebuild.
“This could take a number of days. We understand the frustration of the locals but ask for their patience,” he said.
Mr Marsh said as main lines were fixed it was important if customers had part power or no power, especially when neighbours did have supply, that they contacted their electricity retailer.
People should stay well clear of any downed lines and call emergency services on 111 or Powerco’s emergency line on 0800 27 27 27 if they still have safety concerns.
Customers should contact their electricity retailer for information about power cuts.
