Power restoration work continues

Powerco continues to make steady progress restoring power to its damaged electricity network in Taranaki following Sunday's high winds.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said supply had been restored to all but around 150 properties in the region.

“Powerco wishes to thank customers for their patience during this event. We are mindful of the inconvenience power cuts cause to customers and are working to safely get supply on to these last customers as soon as possible.”

Additional resources from other regions are helping with the clean-up, bringing the number of field staff to around 80. Crews have worked through the night to restore supply and will continue through the day.

High winds also cut power to around 2500 properties in and around Whanganui on Monday afternoon, while snow caused power cuts in Taihape over the weekend. Around 50 households remain without supply in these areas.

Mr Marsh said trees had caused the majority of problems snapping lines, cross-arms and poles.

“Many of the power cuts could have been avoided if people had contacted suitably qualified tree trimmers to have their trees cut or trimmed before they caused a problem,’ he said.
