Palmerston North CBD update

Thursday, September 15, 2016

Powerco today commenced work excavating a damaged electricity cable which runs underneath The Square in Palmerston North.

Powerco is making good progress constructing a temporary overhead power line in central Palmerston North to reinforce the electricity supply to the city's central business district.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the 33,000 volt cable, which is one of three supplying the Main Street substation, failed a week ago triggering Powerco’s move to build a temporary new overhead line to reinforce the electricity supply to the CBD until new underground cables can be installed and commissioned.

“We will excavate a section of the faulty cable, which runs underneath The Square, to undertake some remedial work and it is likely the work will take around a week.”

The area to be excavated is in a grassed area, approximately five metres square, on the eastern side of The Square, across from the Information Centre. The grassed area will be reinstated once work has been completed.

Mr Marsh said Powerco wished to apologise for any inconvenience to the public while the works were being undertaken.

“Powerco is working to minimise inconvenience while we undertake works in the CBD. We understand these projects can cause disruption and we would like to thank people for their patience and support.”
