Powerco issues warning as severe weather approaches

Monday, July 11, 2022

Powerco customers are being urged to secure outdoor objects that can blow into power lines ahead of high winds and heavy rainfall expected over the next couple of days.

The weather is forecast to impact all regions of Powerco’s network, with high winds and strong gales expected in the east (Tauranga, Coromandel and Valley regions) from midnight tonight, and picking up in the western regions (Taranaki, Manawatu, Tararua, Rangitikei, Whanganui and Wairarapa) from early Tuesday morning.

Powerco Head of Network Operations Caz Haydon says field crews are on standby ready to respond.

“With severe weather expected to last through to Wednesday afternoon, it is likely to cause damage to our electricity network.

“We do our very best to prepare for extreme weather events and respond quickly by having extra crews on the ground ready to make repairs and restore power to our customers.

“Our crews will work as quickly and safely as they can but as we know from past weather events, challenging conditions may result in delays. For example, high levels of rainfall could cause access issues in terms of flooding and sodden soils.

“Our customers have an important role to play too – before the wild weather arrives, please take the time to secure anything that could blow into lines, such as trampolines, outdoor furniture and other loose items such as sheets of iron. Wind-blown trampolines and loose roofing iron have caused multiple power outages in previous storms and are a major threat to people’s safety.”

If anyone comes across downed or low power lines, they must keep well clear and call Powerco’s emergency line on 0800 27 27 27.

Customers can prepare for possible power outages by stocking up on torches and batteries, ensuring cellphone batteries are charged and BBQ gas bottles filled, and having bottled water on hand if they rely on a pump. Visit the Powerco website for more power outage tips.

Customers wanting information about power cuts can go to Powerco’s power outage webpage https://www.powerco.co.nz/outages or can contact their electricity retailer.
