Update reinforcement of electricity supply to Palmerston North CBD
Powerco is making good progress constructing a temporary overhead power line in central Palmerston North to reinforce the electricity supply to the city's central business district.
Construction of the temporary line between the Keith Street and Main Street substations began yesterday (Monday 12 September) and Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said about 1km of power poles had already been installed along the 3km stretch.
“We are making very good progress and we are on track for the overhead line to be finished in two-to-three weeks.
“People have been very supportive and helpful which we appreciate. Again, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience these works cause to people. We thank you for your patience,” Mr Marsh said.
Powerco is working with Palmerston North City Council and the NZ Transport Agency to minimise disruption during this process, and is speaking to people directly affected by the overhead lines being installed.
The temporary line will consist of a series of poles, cross-arms and three separate conductors.
The overhead line will provide security of electricity supply to the city, while Powerco replaces underground cables that have failed, a larger job which is expected to take six-to-nine months.
