Strong Winds Interupt Power Supply

Thursday, September 05, 2013

Power supply to about 1000 customers in and around coastal and south Taranaki was interrupted today following strong winds.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the outages occurred mainly overnight and good progress was being made to restore power to the last affected consumers.

"Safety is Powerco’s top priority and there are lines down. We need people to keep themselves, their children and their pets well away from any downed power lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272 727 or call 111.

Mr Marsh said Powerco thanked customers for their patience.

"We are mindful of the inconvenience power cuts cause to customers and are working to safely get supply on to affected customers as soon as possible."

Mr Marsh said trees had caused the majority of the cuts to supply.

"Many of the power cuts could have been avoided if people had contacted suitably qualified tree trimmers to have their trees cut or trimmed before they caused a problem," he said.

The strong winds are expected to ease throughout the morning.
