Snow damage affecting restoration efforts

Saturday, July 15, 2017

It's been another big day for Powerco crews as they continue to work to restore power to the storm damaged Western region.

Powerco Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the crews had worked extremely hard to get power restored to many households today.

“We have all the crews available out in affected areas and they will continue working into the night and again tomorrow.

“With the use of helicopters we have found major damage in the Central Plateau area and around Taihape and Mangaweka. The extent of the damage to rural and remote areas indicates that it might be several days before power can be fully restored,” he said.

There has been some good progress in other areas and crews will continue into the darkness. Areas where customers are still without power include Wairarapa 49, Manawatu 488, Whanganui 80, Taranaki 161 and Rangitikei (which includes Marton, Taihape, Waiouru and Raetihi) 1500.

“We hope to reduce those numbers again tonight and we will be back out there at first light tomorrow morning. We appreciate our crews for their efforts and we thank those that are still without power for their understanding in this difficult time.”

Mr Marsh urged people to remain wary of downed lines. Anyone coming across downed lines should keep well clear of them and call emergency services on 111 or Powerco on 0800 27 27 27 immediately.

“Use these numbers for emergency calls only. People have been calling our 0800 for information on outages which has been clogging our emergency lines. They need to call their retailer or check our faults page at www.powerco.co.nz for outage details.
