Power cuts following severe weather

Monday, February 13, 2017

Powerco field crews have worked throughout the day restoring electricity to customers affected by extreme weather in Wairarapa and Manawatu.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said high winds, flying branches and falling trees were responsible for power cuts in Feilding, Masterton, Greytown and Eketahuna.

“We have been able to restore power to about 410 customers in Greytown and Eketahuna. Powerco is working to reconnect the remaining 134 residents in Feilding and Greytown,” he said.

An insulator fault had caused the problem in Feilding while trees on lines disrupted service in Masterton.

A close watch was being kept on the weather and crews were ready if the high winds continued.

“High winds and falling trees often tear down power lines and power lines can kill. Keep yourself, children, pets or livestock well clear of downed power lines and treat all lines as live at all times. If you see a downed power line, call emergency services on 111 immediately,” Mr Marsh said.
