Powerco has just completed a feeder project in Whitianga to help future-proof the electricity supply for the fast-growing area.

The work has been undertaken to meet the supply demands of the major new canal development near the entrance of Whitianga Harbour.

Once finished, the Waterways project will include shops, cafes, businesses, community facilities and new residential areas.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the company had taken a proactive approach in ensuring the development had a reliable electricity supply. This was one of many planned projects as part of Powerco’s continued investment in the area.

“The projects will help improve reliability for this fast-growing area by accommodating forecast growth in demand for electricity as well as strengthening the electricity supply lines to the surrounding areas," Mr Marsh said.

He said a new 11kV circuit breaker had been installed into the Whitianga substation on Moewai Road, and a 2km-long 11kV underground cable from the substation to a new feeder on Joan Gaskell Drive.

The work, which started in May and finished on Wednesday (29 June), would also enhance security of supply for consumers in the Purangi area.
