Coromandel and Bay of Plenty severe weather - 7.30am update

Sunday, July 19, 2015

Crews have made good progress restoring power to customers in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel following severe weather in the regions.

Supply was restored to all 6000 customers who initially lost power in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel, Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Sevenson said.

High winds overnight, however, have caused new outages in and around Waihi and Whiritoa, affecting several hundred customers, he said. Power was expected to be restored for those areas by early this afternoon.

Many of the power cuts were due to trees falling on overhead lines in strong winds.

Mr Stevenson reminded people to use an approved contractor to remove or trim trees that are close to power lines.
