NEW OMANU SUBSTATION ESSENTIAL FOR LOCAL ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

4 May 2009

Economic growth in the Bay of Plenty is tracking at such a pace that the new substation Powerco has planned for Omanu, near Mount Maunganui, is essential to ensure security of supply and accommodate forecast increases in electricity demand.

“At a time where there are concerns about a global economic downturn, Powerco is investing in infrastructure and the Omanu substation and related works represents an injection into the economy of around $6 million.

“We are looking at using local contractors, employing local people on projects designed specifically to ensure the lights stay on and businesses and people living or considering moving into the region can be assured of a reliable supply of electricity.”

“We understand the concerns people have about our proposed substation and have worked to mitigate and minimise any perceived adverse effects. This will be a quiet, safe and tidy substation that blends in with the surroundings.”

Mr Whaley said Powerco was committed to being a good neighbour and working proactively to build a positive relationship with people living near its facilities and welcomed their feedback.
