Storm update 10am Tuesday

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Powerco is sending more field staff to regions in the central and lower North Island this morning to help with power restoration efforts.

Nearly 20,000 properties in Wairarapa, Manawatu, Whanganui and South Taranaki have lost power since severe weather hit the country yesterday morning.

Crews have made good gains, restoring supply to all but around 3000 customers. They will continue to work through the day to restore supply as quickly and safely as possible.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said resources had been boosted and he expected the majority of customers would have power back on today.

“Seventy field staff are working in the affected areas and another 20 are on their way to assist.”

Mr Marsh urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272727.

“Power lines that have fallen to the ground may look safe but they’re very often still live. Live lines can kill. Keep yourselves, your children, pets and livestock well away from any downed lines and call Powerco.”

People with mobile phones with a web browser can save Powerco’s outage and faults page www.powerco.co.nz/Outages-and-Faults/ to their favourites for latest information about power cuts and expected restoration times.

People wanting further information about power cuts should call their electricity retailer.
