Storm Update 5.30pm

Monday, October 14, 2013

Powerco has field staff on standby in preparation for the severe weather forecast to strike Wairarapa this evening.

Strong winds have already brought down trees and lines, causing power cuts across Wairarapa, Rangitikei, Manawatu and Whanganui today. Around 3700 properties remain without supply, the majority in Wairarapa.

Gales gusting more than 130km/h are forecast to hit Wairarapa this evening and are likely to cause further power cuts.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the company’s focus was to safely restore supply to customers as soon as possible.

“It’s likely that some customers will be without power until tomorrow.

“Around 50 field staff have been dispatched and crews are on standby to work through the night to make lines safe. Another 20 linesmen are on their way to the affected areas.”

Mr Marsh urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272727.

“Power lines that have fallen to the ground may look safe but they’re very often still live. Live lines can kill. Keep yourselves, your children, pets and livestock well away from any downed lines and call Powerco.”

People with mobile phones with a web browser can save Powerco’s outage and faults page www.powerco.co.nz/Outages-and-Faults/ to their favourites for latest information about power cuts and expected restoration times.

People wanting further information about power cuts should call their electricity retailer.
