Powerco has made repairs to a flood-damaged substation, restoring power to the majority of customers in Whanganui.
The flooded substation, coupled with a large slip that brought down power lines and poles, had cut supply to parts of the city.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the substation had been re-livened this afternoon and supply to 5000 of the initial 6000 properties that lost supply last night had been restored.
He said there were still are several other pockets within Whanganui, Rangitikei and Taranaki without power.
Crews are on standby ready to fix damaged sections of the network as soon as roads were cleared.
“It may be several days before we can reach some areas due to slips blocking the roads. As soon as we can get to these areas repairs will be made as quickly as possible.”
Powerco urges people to stay well clear of any fallen power lines and phone Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727.
