Powerco is making good progress restoring power to customers in Whanganui.
A flooded substation, coupled with a large slip that brought down power lines and poles last night, has cut supply to parts of the city.
Of the 6000 customers affected this morning, 2400 remain without supply.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said repairs were being made to the substation which was expected to be re-livened this afternoon, restoring power to the majority of remaining customers.
There are several other pockets in Whanganui, Rangitikei and Taranaki that are also without power.
Mr Stevenson said crews were on standby ready to fix damaged sections of the network as soon as roads were cleared.
“It may be several days before we can reach some areas due to slips blocking the roads. As soon as we can get to these areas repairs will be made as quickly as possible.”
Powerco urges people to stay well clear of any fallen power lines and phone Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727.
