Power has been restored to about half the Whanganui properties cut off from supply by flooding and slips overnight.
More than 6000 customers were without power overnight but by 11am today that had been trimmed to about 3000.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said shortly before midnight a large slip took out repair work faultmen had fixed earlier in the day. The unstable nature of that slip continues to hamper progress.
“We continue to assess the situation and will be doing everything we can to restore supply as soon as possible.”
There are several other pockets within Whanganui that also remain without power.
In Waverley and Waitotara flooding and fallen lines have cut power to about 170 properties and in Taranaki three areas have supply cuts. The Uruti Valley has been affected by slips and trees that have lowered lines and it is not known when full supply will be restored. At Strathmore in eastern Taranaki, faultmen are working to reconnect about 136 properties.
Powerco urges people to stay well clear of any fallen power lines and phone Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727.
