Severe weather causes power cuts: Update 3

Saturday, June 20, 2015

Around 1500 customers in Whanganui, Rangitikei and Taranaki face the night without power as slips and flooding make it impossible for field crews to get to affected areas.

Heavy rain continues to fall, preventing field crews from accessing the network and making repairs.

Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the situation was being closely monitored and repairs would begin as soon as roads were cleared.

He said there were currently 1000 customers in Whanganui without power due to flooding at a substation last night. A small number of those customers will also be without power tonight.

“As well as flooding at the substation there are trees across high voltage lines in Whanganui. We are rebuilding a damaged line so everyone can be supplied by an alternative route while repairs are undertaken at the substation.”

Heavy rain and flooding has caused minor damage across other parts Powerco’s electricity network. It is expected around 75 customers in central New Plymouth will have supply restored shortly.

Powerco urges people to stay well clear of any fallen power lines and phone Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727.
