Severe weather 9.45pm update

Saturday, May 24, 2014

Supply has been restored to around 1700 consumers in Wairarapa and Tararua over the past two days as high winds continue to cause power cuts.

The strong winds are bringing trees down across overhead lines, cutting power on parts of Powerco’s electricity network. Field crews have been battling blustery conditions as they work to repair the damage.

Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said there were currently 2800 properties across Wairarapa, Tararua and now Whanganui without supply. The majority were expected to have supply restored later tonight.

He said additional field crews had been brought in to help restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

There had been several incidents of power lines falling to the ground, he warned.

“Stay away from any downed power lines and treat them as live at all times. Call Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272727.”

He said the stormy weather was forecast to continue tomorrow, bringing the possibility of further power cuts.
