Crews are making good progress restoring power to customers in and around Waihi and Whiritoa after trees and branches fell over lines in high winds early this morning.
Around 150 customers remain without power due to lines being down, Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said.
Repairs were underway, with power expected to be restored to most of those affected by 3pm, he said.
All but a few of the 6000 customers who initially lost power in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel on Saturday due to the severe weather have had their power restored.
Any isolated outages were expected to have power restored by tonight, Mr Stevenson said.
Meanwhile, about 300 customers in the southern Wairarapa lost power just before 7am today, also due to trees falling through lines in the severe weather. Power was restored by 8.50am.
Mr Stevenson said these types of power cuts could be avoided if tree owners called in the professionals to clear their trees from lines.
“Arranging for a Powerco approved contractor to cut away branches growing too close to lines would make a huge difference.”
