Severe weather has caused multiple power cuts in Wairarapa, Manawatu and Whanganui today.
Strong winds have continued through this evening, bringing down trees and lines. Power was cut to 8700 properties in the Wairarapa around 8pm. Supply was restored to these customers just after 8.30pm.
Crews are working in challenging conditions to restore supply to around 2000 properties, mainly in Whanganui and Wairarapa, that have lost power due to the strong winds.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the company’s focus was to safely restore supply to customers as soon as possible.
“Around 50 field staff have been dispatched and crews are on standby to work through the night to make lines safe. Another 20 linesmen are on their way to the affected areas.”
Mr Marsh urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272727.
“Power lines that have fallen to the ground may look safe but they’re very often still live. Live lines can kill. Keep yourselves, your children, pets and livestock well away from any downed lines and call Powerco.”
