Most customers who lost power during yesterday's high winds are expected to have their supply restored by this evening.
The severe weather caused wide-spread power cuts in Tauranga, South Waikato and Coromandel.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said field crews had already restored power to about 28,000 customers. Good progress was being made in challenging conditions to restore the remaining 2,000 customers, with most expected to have electricity by tonight, he said.
Field crews were having trouble accessing some areas to repair faults due to road closures, flooding and storm debris.
Mr Stevenson said that as well as repairing current faults, crews were on alert, with further high winds expected for the northern Bay of Plenty and Coromandel areas between 8pm and midnight tonight.
Extra field crews had been brought into the affected areas to help restore supply as quickly and safety as possible.
“Our first priority is making the network safe. Stay away from any downed power lines and call Powerco’s emergency number 0800 272 727.”
Mr Stevenson said most of the damage had been caused by trees falling across lines.
“These power cuts could have been avoided if the trees had been trimmed or felled to avoid problems.”
