Powerco prepared for severe weather

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

Powerco has field staff on standby in preparation for severe weather forecast to strike the top of North Island.

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for northern New Zealand today and early tomorrow.

Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the company was monitoring the situation. Contractors had been advised to rest their staff in preparation for the severe weather.

He said strong winds were likely to cause power cuts and Powerco’s focus would be to safely restore supply to customers as soon as possible.

He said householders could take a few simple steps to prepare for the event.

“We suggest people have a battery powered radio and torch handy. Trampolines should be securely fixed to the ground as they can cause multiple power cuts in strong winds.”

Powerco’s outage and faults page will have information about power cuts and expected restoration times. People wanting information about power cuts who do not have internet access should call their electricity retailers.

For emergencies like trees in power lines or lines down, people should call Powerco on 0800 272727 and keep well clear of the hazard.
