Power was restored to more than 300 customers last night and crews were out in full force again this morning.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the immense damage had meant the Central Plateau and Manawatu remained the worst affected areas.
“There are still many customers without power. As we get deeper into the extent of the damage we reassess timeframes to get everyone back on full power,” he said.
“Our best intention today is to determine when we expect power to be restored so customers can plan. We understand this is very frustrating and we are focusing on giving people some certainty,” he said.
He said more than 200 field staff were working across the network.
“The damage is scattered across large areas which intensifies the challenges for our crews.”
Most of the repairs have been completed in the Wairarapa and Taranaki and these crews are being deployed to other areas in need.
People must stay well clear of downed lines and call emergency services on 111 or Powerco’s emergency line on 0800 27 27 27 immediately.
Customers should contact their electricity retailer for information about power cuts rather than calling Powerco’s emergency line.
If customers have part-power or no power, especially if neighbours have supply, it is important they contact their electricity retailer.
