Power has been reconnected this morning to 104 evacuated properties in central Whanganui following threats of flooding associated with Cyclone Debbie in the town.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said the electricity supply to homes and businesses around Anzac Parade, Putiki Drive and the lower Taupo Quay-CBD area was disconnected yesterday as people in the potential flood zone were evacuated.
“Our field crews reconnected supply to these properties this morning and people are starting to move back into the affected areas.
“Thankfully the scale of flooding that was predicted did not occur for the people of Whanganui. Even though there was no large scale flooding, the event demonstrated real team work between Civil Defence, our electricity field service contractors Downer and Powerco to ensure the power was disconnected and reconnected promptly and safely when it was needed,” Mr Marsh said.
