Electricity was restored to all Powerco customers in the Coromandel, Thames Valley and Hauraki Plains areas about 12.30am this morning following a bird strike on Transpower's network.
Power was cut just after 10pm Sunday to around 46,000 customers following the substantial grid outage, Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said.
Transpower operates the national grid.
“These acts of nature happen from time-to-time but we have contingency plans in place for just such events. In this instance, we were able to get the power back on to our customers safely and efficiently,” Mr Stevenson said.
