Power cut in New Plymouth

Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Power was cut to about 500 customers in and around lower Westown earlier today after a tree came down on power lines in Frankley Rd, New Plymouth.

Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the power cut, which occurred about 12.30pm, firstly cut power to customers on Frankley Rd and Maratahu St.

A secondary fault on Powerco’s network then resulted in more cuts in Fulford St and Dawson St.

Mr Stevenson said the majority of customers had power restored within the hour. It was expected repairs would be completed around 3pm, when the remaining properties would have power back on.

Strong winds are believed to have caused the tree to fall on lines.  It was a timely reminder for people to have trees that are close to overhead power lines trimmed or felled by Powerco approved contractors, Mr Stevenson said.
