Focus on Restoring Supply

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Powerco has restored electricity supply to more than 20,000 properties since severe winds started to batter the North Island on Monday.

The affected areas include Wairarapa, Manawatu, Whanganui, Coromandel and South Taranaki.

The majority of the approximately 200 customers still without electricity are expected to be connected by tonight, Powerco Network Operation Manager Phil Marsh said.

More than 70 Powerco field staff were working hard in difficult conditions to get electricity restored to affected properties, Mr Marsh said.

“Powerco is mindful of the inconvenience caused to customers and we are working to get power back on safely as soon as possible.  Efforts to gain access to some affected areas are being hampered by flooding, fallen trees and land slips.”

Mr Marsh said trees had caused the majority of the power cuts.

“Many of the power cuts could have been avoided if people had contacted suitably qualified tree trimmers to have their trees cut or trimmed before they caused a problem.”

He urged members of the public to keep clear of any damaged lines and report them to Powerco on 0800 272 727.

People with mobile phones with a web browser can save Powerco’s outage and faults page www.powerco.co.nz/Outages-and-Faults/ to their favourites for latest information about power cuts and expected restoration times.
