Supply has been restored to about 4000 Powerco customers in the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel Peninsula following today's severe weather.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said crews were working hard to restore power to affected areas.
Electricity was being progressively restored, with the majority of the 1800 still without power expected to be restored overnight.
“We will get power back on to the remaining customers as quickly and safely as we can,” Mr Stevenson said.
Many of the power cuts were due to trees falling on overhead lines in strong winds.
Mr Stevenson reminded people to use an approved contractor to remove or trim trees that are close to power lines.
