Powerco offers reward for information about thefts and vandalism

24 September 2008

Thieves and vandals in the Manawatu have been damaging roadside pillar boxes and transformers, placing members of the public at risk and causing thousands of dollars worth of damage to Powerco's electricity network.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Ross Dixon said the problem of vandalism had been around for many years however there had recently been a surge in antisocial behaviour that was a major concern to Powerco.

"Currently around two or three roadside pillar boxes are being kicked in each week in the Manawatu area, particularly in Palmerston North and Ashhurst. Recent maintenance inspections have revealed thieves have also been stealing the earth straps off some of our transformers, presumably to sell the $3-4 dollars worth of scrap copper they contain."

Mr Dixon said Powerco was alarmed that the damaged pillar boxes could potentially leave exposed live wires easily accessible to the public.

"We undertake regular inspections of all our assets however when people kick in these boxes at a rate of two or three a week we are often reliant on the public to advise us of the locations of the damaged gear."

"The removal of the earth straps from transformers is also highly dangerous as it undermines the safety of the network."

If anyone notices a damaged pillar box they should keep well clear and call Powerco's emergency number 0800 272727 to report the location so Powerco could have it made safe.

Mr Dixon said anyone seeing vandals causing damage to the network should contact Police by dialling 111.

People with information about the identities of people involved with the theft or vandalism should contact Powerco during business hours on 0800 769372.

Mr Dixon said Powerco was prepared to pay a reward of up to $5000 for information leading to a conviction and subsequent court-ordered reparation order from anyone found to have caused damage to the network. Powerco will calculate the reward based on 10% of the amount of the reparation order.

Powerco is New Zealand's second largest electricity and gas distribution utility with around 400,000 consumers connected to its networks. Powerco's electricity networks are in Tauranga, Thames, Coromandel, Eastern and Southern Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, Rangitikei, Manawatu and the Wairarapa. Its gas pipeline networks are in Taranaki, Hutt Valley, Porirua, Wellington, Horowhenua, Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and Tasmania.
