Major milestone for latest Tauranga electricity substation
Powerco's new $5.5 million substation at Matapihi represents another major investment in Tauranga's electricity infrastructure

Powerco Electricity Planning Manager Michael Whaley said the Company had replaced an aging electricity substation at the site with a new state of the art facility.

"We now have two new transformers which take electricity at 33,000 volts and convert it to 11,000 volts and then feed out supply to the surrounding areas. The new substation has been successfully commissioned and as now supplying electricity to customers in the surrounding suburbs."

The new substation and related equipment represent an investment by Powerco of around $5.5 million in the local electricity network.

"This is a significant project for Tauranga and we expect these assets will provide a safe and reliable supply of electricity to people in the surrounding areas for the next 50 to 60 years," Mr Whaley said.

"This substation and related equipment will effectively future-proof the electricity supply for this fast growing area by accommodating forecast growth in demand for electricity as well as strengthening the electricity supply lines to the surrounding areas."

Mr Whaley said the Powerco wished to thank neighbours of the site for their patience during the more than 12 months of construction.

"Powerco has worked closely with the residents in the neighbouring properties to keep them informed and minimise the inconvenience and we have appreciated their support for this important project. We have some site clean-up work planned over the next couple of months and we are working to minimise any noise or other disruption to neighbours of the site."
